Speakers at the event included:
Henry Rayment - Resident Agent, Castle Howard Estate Ltd, Christopher Bourne-Arton, Yorkshire CLA President, Andrew Fearn, Head of the Agriculture Unit at Langleys and Stephen Baylis, Head of the Finance Unit at Langleys. The issues covered were clearly of concern to the agricultural community who turned out in force to the event with a full house of over 80 attendees.
Andrew Fearn who presented on the Agricultural Holdings Act 1986 reminded delegates of the main criteria for securing tenancy succession. He also covered Inheritance Tax and the associated reliefs namely Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief.
He comments: “It was great to be able to share some of the latest developments in the law with professional colleagues and clients. The “Brander” case (also known as the “Balfour” case) in particular, represents very good news for major landowners but – beware, the Revenue will almost certainly appeal!”
Stephen Baylis provided an overview of the financial market and the recent banking related economic events. He was also able to reflect on funder failures and restructuring within the Yorkshire finance market.
He says: “We are all told that global losses flowing from the banking crisis have been significant and could be as much as $1.6 trillion. To put this in context this sum would be sufficient to buy a farm six times the size of England!”
