We truly pride ourselves in the quality of our trainee programme and pull out all the stops to equip you for success!

We see our trainees as the future of the firm and a number of our senior associates and partners  started their legal journeys with us, successfully qualifying and progressing from there.

Our ultimate goal is to develop you into a competent and confident qualified solicitor. You will provide vital support to our teams during the 2 year programme,  but this will be geared towards your personal growth in all of the core skills needed for you to thrive on qualification.

WHAT IT IS LIKE TO WORK AT LANGLEYS

We want to build a forward thinking legal services business that changes people's perceptions about what it is like to work with and be part of a law firm.

What to expect from us?

The Programme

The 2 year programme is typically split into a number of ‘seats’ which will be allocated based on personal preference and business need in a minimum of 3 different teams.

We will work hard to get to know you, your strengths and your areas of interest. Whilst we can never guarantee seat choices (factors like the availability of work and supervision being key considerations) we do like our trainees to have a say in their seat selections and your preferences will be discussed with you throughout your time with us. Whichever seats you complete you can be sure to develop core transferable skills and to build those all important relationships across the firm.

What areas can I practice in?

Trainee working areas at Langleys

Practice areas available are as follows:

  • Agriculture
  • Commercial Property
  • Corporate
  • CPI (personal injury and medical negligence claims on behalf of people)
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Employment
  • Family & Matrimonial
  • Private Client
  • Child Law

What support will I receive as a trainee?

The support you receive will be second to none. As an incoming trainee you will be allocated a buddy from our existing trainee cohort to support you in your first few months and beyond.  Your buddy is there to provide informal support and guidance, they are a friendly face who will help you to get to grips with all of the basics about life at Langleys and will also help you to settle in socially.

You will also have a  trainee supervisor for each of your seats who will take charge of ensuring you have a good variety of work that allows you to work towards all of the key areas of competence. They will be key to your professional development and will provide you with regular feedback to help you to grow your skills.

Alongside regular feedback you will have a more structured review at the mid and end point of each seat. These check ins allow you and your supervisor to reflect more fully on your strengths and development areas to ensure that your objectives continue to stretch you to achieve the very best from your experience.

Moving between seats is an exciting time, you have new experiences and a fresh challenge to look forward to. These periods can also be a good test of your versatility, with each move will come a whole new team and supervisor with different ways of working! To help ease the transition we facilitate a preparation session between the outgoing and incoming trainee – these sessions are incredibly successful in helping you get to grips with all of the basics in relation to the type of work you will get involved with, and how things are done within your new team.

Two way feedback throughout the process is also incredibly important to us. We will give you plenty and seek the same in return! At the end of each seat we will hold a feedback session with you which is a great opportunity for you to have an input into the whole process and suggest any changes or improvements that you would like to see.

Additional Training and Support

As well as on the job training, we also offer a number of internal training programmes and one-off sessions such as lunch and learns which we encourage our trainees to join. We have a number of internal resources which can also support your development journey such as our webinar hub which includes both technical and personal development content as well as our Library and online resources. You will also complete the Professional Skills Course (PSC)  as part of the your experience.

Marketing, Business Development and Networking

As a trainee you will be regularly involved with marketing activities, this can vary from helping out with the arrangements to writing and even delivering of some of the sessions.

We also encourage you to get involved with relevant external groups such as Young Professional and the Junior Lawyers Division.

Your internal profile is also important. We encourage all of our trainees to get involved in firm wide activities that not only help them to raise their profile but also to develop additional skills. These opportunities might include taking part in our social committee, joining our wellbeing and values group, representing the firm at external events such as careers fairs and employer panel events, and providing mentoring to aspiring future trainees. The opportunities are endless and we encourage you to grab them with both hands!
