About James

James Henson is a partner with Langleys Solicitors and is Head of the Disputes team representing people and business who need to resolve their issues through litigation.

James works for a very wide and diverse range of clients. Since about 2008 he has been frequently instructed by the European Commission, representing the European Union in the highest appeal courts, having assisted them as intervener twice in the Supreme Court as well as in the Court of Appeal, together with pursuing and defending claims in the High Court. James is also frequently instructed by plcs, owner managed businesses and individuals.  Over the years clients’ descriptions of James in Legal 500 have included, ‘having a knowledge of the law that is invaluable’, ‘able to cut to the essence of a dispute quickly ’ and ‘an astute and very able lawyer who combines his legal acumen with an excellent client facing side’.

James’ broad commercial litigation expertise includes:

  • General commercial contractual disputes including in areas such as engineering, manufacturing, entertainment and IT
  • Shareholder disputes including breaches of fiduciary duty, misfeasance, and restraint of trade

Over the years James has procured a number of freezing injunctions and search and seizure orders for clients. He frequently engages in arbitration as well as other forms of dispute resolution such as mediation and expert determination.

He qualified as a solicitor in 1997 and spent 14 years working in Leeds with Hammond Suddards (now Squire Patton Boggs) and 3 years in Sheffield working with Nabarro (now CSM). He joined Langleys as a partner in 2016 and heads the Dispute Resolution team.

  • James is a litigation specialist for people and businesses. Here is an example of some of his recent work
  • Advising a major international supplier of building products in a multi million pound dispute with a major national housebuilder over the supply of allegedly defective concrete block for use on a number of housebuilding sites in the South East.
  • Advising one of the world’s largest privately owned media businesses in a dispute concerning the termination of a number of contracts and alleged breaches of contract, with a supplier of two particular annual live performance shows.
  • Advising a visitor attraction provider in a contractual dispute with ITV relating to the provision of guided tours of the sets of a local well known daily television series.
  • Advising the European Commission acting as an intervener in a number of significant appeal court decisions including in the Court of Appeal in support of the Competition and Markets Authority against Flynn Pharma and Pfizer Inc and in the Supreme Court in the cases of Sainsburys Supermarkets & Others v Visa and Mastercard and, in support of the state of Romania,  the case of Micula v Romania.
  • Advising a national supplier of ready meals in a dispute with its packaging supplier regarding defective packaging.
  • Advising a supplier of software, licensing, hardware and computer services in relation to a dispute concerning the provision of an IT security solution for a customer acting as agent on behalf of the Ministry of Defence.   
  • Advising a packaging and print company in a dispute with a competitor concerning alleged infringement of a patent relating to an envelope and packaging machine general intellectual property rights.
  • Advising a supplier of steel in a dispute with a British multinational arms security and aerospace company concerning the quality of steel being supplied to manufacture warships.
