James works for a very wide and diverse range of clients. Since about 2008 he has been frequently instructed by the European Commission, representing the European Union in the highest appeal courts, having assisted them as intervener twice in the Supreme Court as well as in the Court of Appeal, together with pursuing and defending claims in the High Court. James is also frequently instructed by plcs, owner managed businesses and individuals. Over the years clients’ descriptions of James in Legal 500 have included, ‘having a knowledge of the law that is invaluable’, ‘able to cut to the essence of a dispute quickly ’ and ‘an astute and very able lawyer who combines his legal acumen with an excellent client facing side’.
James’ broad commercial litigation expertise includes:
- General commercial contractual disputes including in areas such as engineering, manufacturing, entertainment and IT
- Shareholder disputes including breaches of fiduciary duty, misfeasance, and restraint of trade
- Professional negligence
- Contentious insolvency
- Civil fraud (deceit, conspiracy, breach of trust)
- Infringement of intellectual property rights
Over the years James has procured a number of freezing injunctions and search and seizure orders for clients. He frequently engages in arbitration as well as other forms of dispute resolution such as mediation and expert determination.
He qualified as a solicitor in 1997 and spent 14 years working in Leeds with Hammond Suddards (now Squire Patton Boggs) and 3 years in Sheffield working with Nabarro (now CSM). He joined Langleys as a partner in 2016 and heads the Dispute Resolution team.
