About Marie

Marie is an experienced specialist solicitor who leads Langleys’ York practice advising clients on all aspects of employment law, from pursuit and defence of employment tribunal claims, business restructures, TUPE obligations, redundancy, data protection, executive terminations, settlement agreements, discrimination and whistleblowing, through to day-to-day HR issues including performance management, disciplinary processes and handling absenteeism.

She has almost 20 years’ experience as an employment lawyer, with a strong reputation in York and North Yorkshire.  Having led a team of solicitors for the last 10 years she very much enjoys training up future employment lawyers.  She has a background in languages and teaching, living abroad several times before converting to law and settling in York.

It is perhaps not surprising with that background that she particularly enjoys providing in-house training workshops to frontline managers and senior leadership teams within organisations, as well as presenting seminars on all things employment law to larger audiences.

Over the years, she has acted for a wide range of clients  from representing individuals who have faced unfair dismissal and discrimination, through to advising SMEs, local councils, charities and other organisations, both on day to day HR and employment law issues, as well as representing them in defending tribunal claims.  She also works in multi-disciplinary teams on mergers and acquisitions, dealing with employee due diligence and providing advice on TUPE and employment law risks.  She particularly enjoys supporting businesses almost as part of their in-house team, navigating them through issues arising in order to avoid matters becoming contentious.

Groups and bodies that Marie is a member of

  • Member of the Employment Lawyers’ Association and the Industrial Law Society.
  • Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD).
  • Frequently partnered in the past with other organisations to deliver seminars, workshops and events to audiences ranging from small groups to 150+ delegates.

Recent examples of Marie's work

Recent examples of Marie's experience include:

  • Represented two separate local councils in recent employment tribunal proceedings against them, securing extremely favourable outcomes in both cases, and avoiding the significant cost of reaching final hearings and unwanted negative publicity.
  •  Successfully securing a very low commercial settlement of less than £10k for a local SME, where the Claimant’s compensatory expectations for claims of discrimination at the outset of the proceedings ran to six figures.
  •  Representing senior executives in the negotiation of termination packages ensuring the best possible deals are secured.
  •  Part of a mixed-discipline senior team working on high volume acquisitions for a local but fast growing, now national, business.
  • Successfully secured the recruitment of a senior level employee for a mid-tier energy industry client, amidst threats of injunctive proceedings from the existing employer in reliance upon strict post-termination restrictive covenants.
