Join Langleys for the latest in a series of fascinating, behind-the-scenes experiences at York Minster, exploring ancient history through modern eyes.
We’ll examine the case of Jonathan Martin, an ex Navy man, who set the Minster alight in 1829, claiming to be acting for the greater religious good and discuss how the case would be handled today.
After a private tour of the cathedral, we’ll hold a debate in the historic Consistory Court, questioning whether morality is ever enough to justify a crime and whether today Jonathan Martin would be tried as a religious fanatic or criminally insane.
