The scheme was launched earlier this year (2021) by the Ministry of Justice. The scheme has been successful and the MOJ has made another £800,000 available.

Langleys Solicitors joined the scheme in March. It allows more families to access additional funds to help them cover the cost of using out of court mediation to solve family-based disputes instead of partaking in a lengthy legal process.

The family courts have been under enormous pressure during the pandemic. Court hearings are being listed now well into 2022 which puts families under enormous strain.

Family mediation is a process where a trained independent mediator helps you work out arrangements with another participant concerning children, finance or property. The mediator will help you work through disagreements and find solutions that work. It is a pragmatic solution as it creates a safe space for families, reducing the negative impact on children.

Emma Lawler, senior family lawyer explained: “There are undisputable benefits in making mediation more affordable, especially in the cases where children are involved as it is a much better option for families, allowing them more privacy, flexibility and a faster solution to problems that may arise.”
