Expert advice from specialist divorce and separation lawyers

A relationship breaking down and ending, whether through divorce or separation, can be one of life’s most traumatic experiences. but no matter how daunting and uncertain things may seem, our tenacious family lawyers will support you throughout.

The actual process of becoming legally divorced is, in most cases, relatively straightforward. It is typically the issues of dividing assets, sorting children arrangements, future financial support, living arrangements and other related issues that are difficult, stressful, and time-consuming.

We work with people from a variety of backgrounds and professions, all of whom have a unique list of concerns and want support with specific issues in relation to their individual circumstances. In all cases we have been able to give them sensitive and practical advice, helping them make informed decisions and representing them when they are ready to proceed.

Working with us, you can have absolute confidence that you will have an expert team dedicated to achieving the very best outcome for you and your family:

  • Our first meeting is free, no matter how long it takes to make sure we completely understand your circumstances and what you want to achieve.
  • Everything we talk about throughout the time we spend working together will always be totally confidential.
  • Our teams are top ranked by the legal directories, so you can be sure you will be guided by specialist experts in all areas of family law and cohabitation disputes.
  • Our partners and lawyers have decades of experience, an excellent reputation, and over the years have built up strong relationships with other lawyers, judges and professional bodies.
  • We have teams in Beverley, Lincoln and York, and work with clients across East and North Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the East Midlands.

The types of divorce and separation we can help you with

We are one of the few firms that has dedicated, specialist expertise advising people with more complicated and complex situations. As part of this we regularly advise a range of high net worth clients, including farmers and landowners, entrepreneurs and business owners, and armed forces personnel to protect their wealth during divorce and separation.

In particular we are well known for:

    • Advising armed forces personnel, where we have experience of working with officers in the army and RAF, as well members of the Special Forces and security services. We have specialist expertise in the Armed Forces Pension Scheme, Forces Help to Buy Scheme and Early Departure Payments, all of which can add a degree of complexity that other firms cannot navigate through.
    • Farming divorces, where we work closely with our specialist agriculture team on issues such as the division of estates and business assets.
    • Divorces with an international element, where we have extensive experience of dealing with both child and financial aspects of cross-border separations on an international basis, advising on cases in countries as diverse as China, Bulgaria, Panama, Poland, Ukraine and Bermuda amongst others.
    • Working with high net worth entrepreneurs and business owners to protect business, property, investments and pension assets.

Added to this, we have seen every kind of divorce and separation, including:

    Abusive relationships

Breaking free from an abusive relationship can be incredibly difficult, especially if there are children involved. Injunction proceedings can be issued swiftly to provide you with the protection of the court, and we can introduce you to other local agencies who can provide you with support.

    Interim maintenance payments

Interim maintenance is payable by one spouse to another whilst the divorce proceedings are ongoing, until a financial settlement can be reached or there has been a final order of the court. If interim maintenance cannot be agreed through negotiations, we will help you apply to court for a judge to make a decision on the level of maintenance.

Financial proceedings and the division of pensions

Our family lawyers are supported by colleagues from other teams who can provide complementary advice on wills, trusts, inheritance tax and property. You can rest assured that we will have your best interests at heart from start to finish, and work in a way that gives you comfort and control over the issues to be resolved.

    Mediation

Litigation is not always the answer. If you are feeling hesitant about the process, there are other effective, conflict-free routes that may work for you, such as mediation.

A voluntary and confidential process, mediation provides an open forum to discuss options face-to-face with the benefit of an impartial mediator, and without being legally bound to any statement, unless you choose otherwise. We have qualified mediators in our team who can give you the right support and guidance, as well ensuring complete control of the situation from start to finish.

Recent examples of our work in this area

    We have recently advised

    • A family business owner during complex High Court proceedings, advising on how to protect their £30m business and substantial other assets in the UK and overseas.
    • A wife in a complicated farming divorce valued at £2.5m, which included issues surrounding third party intervenors, enforcement and civil proceedings relating to a partnership dispute.
    • A husband whose former wife was attempting to renege on the terms of a settlement before the court approved the consent order, successfully obtaining an order that upheld the pre-established agreement.
    • The owner of a family accountancy practice, successfully negotiating a financial settlement to protect various pre-marital and family assets.
    • Advising a wife who was pursuing a claim against a property portfolio and complex structure of business assets that were held in the husband’s sole name, including an application for a legal services order and complicated by issues relating to the husband’s capacity.

    Fees and costs

If you would like us to work with you, you will need to pay some money upfront; this is known as providing a ‘payment on account’. This is typically £500, but could be more if you have an imminent court hearing or other substantial work that needs to be dealt with straight away.

For our fees, we will typically send you a bill every month so that you can keep up to date with how much everything costs. The amount will depends on how much work we have done that month.

In addition to our fees, you may also have to pay extra money for a barrister (if you use one) and court fees. These are known as ‘disbursements’ and will need to be paid in advance.

What are people say about working with us

Testimonials from the legal directories include:

    • “Polite and courteous, smart and efficient, kind and caring, and extremely competent – the lawyers gave me a great sense of being in the right place for the job in hand.”
    • “They have strength in depth and handle the whole spectrum of family law from high-net-worth financial remedy work through to children cases.”
    • “Client-focused and sensitive to their clients' needs, but also robust.”

Recent feedback direct from clients includes:

    • I needed some assistance due to an upcoming divorce and went for their free meeting. Other solicitors give 30 minutes or an hour, but this one gave about 2.5 hours (or whatever was needed to discuss the case).
    • They did the needful, explained the process, got the divorce done. All whilst being sensitive to the mess that is divorce...I'd be happy to use their other services. I'm hopeful I don't need the divorce service again!
    • I want to thank you and your team for the incredible outcomes you've secured for me. Seeing my children 50% of the time and remaining a homeowner were my goals and both were achieved, so I'm truly grateful.”
    • “My experience of dealing with Emma has been exceptional. Going through a divorce is something I never expected or was prepared for, so her guidance and support throughout the entire process was an absolute must. I found that Emma listened and cared for me and acknowledged my needs.”
    • The divorce solicitor service approach is exemplary and helps to handle a stressful process
    • Langleys Solicitors are highly recommended. During a difficult time in my life Theo Hoppen's knowledge, professionalism and approach was second to none and got me the end result I was looking for.
    • Claire was recommended to me by my employer. There were complicated finances and she was empathetic yet also very efficient in communications and actions. Claire used the best people when needed from mediators, accountants and valuers. When the case went to Court I came away with a settlement I had not thought possible.
